Dadbod Trademark Application Filed for Beer

Mon Jun 8th, 2015 by  Trademarks

In March, The Odyssey, an online newspaper for college students, published an essay titled “Why Girls Love the Dadbod.” Described as “a nice balance between a beer gut and working out,” the term went viral. Good Morning America interviewed the essay’s author, Mackenzie Pearson, TIME published an article titled “Dad Bod Is a Sexist Atrocity,” and #dadbod popped up all over social media.

As to be expected with all things viral (see Grumpy Cat), a trademark application has been filed on DADBOD. And for what goods? Beer, of course.

Juan Cardenas of Moorpark, California filed the application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on May 29, 2015. Cardenas filed an “intent to use” application, meaning he does not have to be using the mark on his goods just yet. The application has yet to be examined, however, Cardenas has said that microbreweries have expressed interest in the concept. We’re not surprised; after all, in Cardenas’ words, “Dadbod is a lifestyle.”
